Geology

Cape Cod is a peninsula which extends 65 miles into the Atlantic Ocean, from Provincetown in the northeast to Woods Hole, a Falmouth village, in the southwest. Cape Cod is quite young geologically having been laid down from 16,000 to 20,000 years ago. Much of the land on Cape Cod is glacial landforms, formed by terminal moraine and outwash plains. The geological history includes the advance and retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. The many “kettle” ponds resulted from the receding glaciers.

With melting of the glacier, the sea level at times rose more than 10 feet per thousand years. The rising sea level caused the land masses of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket to become islands. With continued coastal erosion, some scientists forecast that Cape Cod may be completely submerged within several thousand years.
